Graduated in history and social anthropology from the University of Cambridge (1975); masters in Latin American Studies from the University of Liverpool (1981), masters in Christian Studies from Regent College, Vancouver, Canada (1983) and PhD in social science from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1993). Was professor adjunto at the Universidade Federal de São Carlos, and Chair in sociology at Calvin College, Michigan, USA. Works in the area of sociology, with emphasis in sociology of religion.
