Abstract

Ultrasound technology has been used to enhance the hydration process of grains and seeds, obtaining positive results. However, the effect of ultrasound treatment on seed quality parameters such as germination and vigour has not been sufficiently studied. This work investigated whether ultrasound technology affected the germination and vigour of four lots of barley seeds. It was demonstrated that ultrasound did not negatively affect germination and vigour and improved germination rate. Several possible explanations for this are given. Therefore, ultrasound technology can be used to enhance the hydration process without negatively affecting seed quality. However, further studies are required to determine the main cause (physical and/or physiological) of the germination rate enhancement. Finally, it is clear that ultrasound is a promising technology in the area of seed science. (AU)
