Abstract

Abstract Favela tourism is the local and exemplary expression of slum tourism, visiting poor areas with the assistance of a guide and with a fee agreed between tourists and promoters. This article is a meta-analysis that discusses the multidisciplinary scholarship on favela tourism. We selected articles published in academic journals, books (monographs or collections), and book chapters, written in Portuguese, Spanish and English, MA theses and PhD dissertations carried out in Brazilian graduate programs, in a total of 146 bibliographic references. We demonstrate that, based on favela tourism, it is possible to address a wide range of themes that, ultimately, problematize the tense relationship between favelas and the rest of the city. (AU)
