Abstract

At the summit of the highest Brazilian mountain, an intriguing species of Parochlus Enderlein, 1912 (Diptera: Chironomidae: Podonominae) was unveiled. This is also the first time that Parochlus specimens were recorded in Brazil. Members of the subfamily Podonominae are hardly found in Brazilian lands, hitherto represented only by a few Podonomus Philippi, 1865 (Diptera: Chironomidae) species limited to the Atlantic Mountains. The presence of the genus Parochlus in the oldest and northernmost region of South America represents a remarkable finding to advance our understanding about the diversity of Podonominae and its biogeographical disjunctive distribution. The female and the peculiar larva of this new species are fully described and illustrated. (AU)
