Abstract

This paper presents a solution to the observed ferroresonance (FRR) phenomenon for both energization switching and load shedding conditions in an unconventional rural electrification system. The energy is extracted from the electric field surrounding an extrahigh voltage transmission line. Ferroresonance occurs in the power transformers of the distribution substation, and the existing solution cannot be directly applied. The mitigation method consists of the insertion of a shunt resistor when the FRR starts. The robustness of the method is shown in a time-domain simulation implemented in PSCAD/EMTDC. (AU)
