Abstract

In the context of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs), several applications rely on localization for a complete work. In the last years, a myriad of applications has been developed which require several levels of accuracy of localization Indeed, a considerable part of these applications and services rely on purely GPS solutions. In scenarios such as tunnels, multilevel roads and dense urban areas where the signals provided by satellites are blocked, several problems happen. Moreover, GPS have errors in the range of 5-15 meters. In this work, we investigate GPS problems of error and unavailability based on real GPS datasets provided by devices coupled in buses and taxis. We demonstrate the drastic impact that GPS void zones can cause for several localization dependent applications. We develop an approach for recognize GPS problems. We developed a variation of Dead Reckoning named Geodesic Dead Reckoning and evaluate it in the face of purely GPS solution. We also demonstrate that several related work uses scenarios of evaluation that favors the performance of the proposed solutions. (AU)
