Abstract

The morphology of a Pt-PbO(x)/C electrocatalyst is described in detail in this work. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging showed that this material is composed of metallic nanoparticles heterogeneously distributed on a carbon support. The observed nanoparticles are separate Pt and PbO(x) domains, as determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS-TEM), and XED-Spectrum Imaging. We determined the presence of very small PbO(x) nanoparticles, not detectable by conventional TEM, closely interacting with the Pt crystallites and homogeneously distributed on the carbon support. The observed morphological distribution of metallic phases may add new factors for the understanding of the superior performance of the Pt-PbO(x)/C catalyst in the oxidation of small organic molecules, as compared to the Pt/C catalyst.
