The Table of Fields of Knowledge has a primarily practical purpose and serves as a support tool, especially for funding institutions, both in the evaluation and in the management of scientific and technological research. Among its functions are: the organization and management of knowledge; support for decision-making, researchers, and the evaluation of research projects; and the production of statistics and indicators.
FAPESP’s classification of Fields of Knowledge is related to that adopted by CNPq. It is organized into three hierarchical levels, from the most general to the most specific: the 1st level groups the Broadest Fields; the 2nd level contains the Fields; and the 3rd level includes the Subfields.
To access the information on this page, click the + sign next to the Broadest Fields of Knowledge to view the list of Fields, and repeat the operation to see the respective Subfields. Select the term of interest at any level and click on it to view reference information about the research classified under that heading.
The Table of Fields in expanded format is also available for consultation. To locate a specific term in the table, use your browser's Find function (press Control + F or CmD + F on your keyboard), type in the desired term, and it will be highlighted in the table. By clicking on that term, you will gain access to reference information on the research classified under it.
