Family Solidarity Between Generations In Vulnerable Situation: Children's Family Relationships With Disabilities In Brazil and Portugal

Abstract

This research project is a partnership established 10 years ago with a researcher at the University of Porto in the field of family studies. Thus, this study implements a research field developed in Portugal in the framework of an international consortium which 27 European countries interested in the Family Solidarity Intergenerational phenomenon. In Brazil, it is intended to know how this phenomenon occurs through public universities partnerships. Particularly in UFSCar, the focus will be in the context of everyday life of families when they have a child with disabilities and a high degree of dependency generating situations of vulnerability in these homes. It is hypothesized that intergenerational exchanges of support in the most diverse dimensions (functional, affective and conflictual) can function as protection mechanisms and promote the family resilience of each of members. It is considered that the intergenerational solidarity is an essential element in helping families to deal with their stressors and consequent impacts on the health of individuals. The bio-ecological approach to human development in systemic perspective provides support for both the design of research and for the collection and analysis of data. The aim is to describe and analyze the variations of intergenerational solidarity established between mothers and grandmothers of children with disabilities and high degree of dependence. This is a descriptive research whose methodology provides for the use of instruments that allow quantitative and qualitative analysis. It is intended to compare information obtained from data from other countries, noting that it is a cross-cultural study. The similarities in the educational and cultural aspects and the economic crisis in both countries in the present moment, enable a fruitful dialogue that can lead to alternative solutions for both. It also envisions the possibility of subsidizing through the obtained data, Brazilian public policies related to human development. (AU)
