Abstract

Aggregates are the most representative material of the concrete. Its characteristics affect mechanical performance of concrete. In the last decades, a reduction of the quality aggregate increasing the content of porous and weak particles is observed near metropolitan area of large cities related to regional scarcity of raw materials. This research aims: a) determining compressive strength and elastic modulus of particles of aggregates and those of cement pastes, particle per particle, and b) investigating the influence of aggregates weak particles content on mechanical performance of concretes. Experimental plan will include the determination of porosity and strength distributions of the granite aggregates, as well as the porosity and strength distributions of cement pastes (with different porosities or water/cement ratios). A concrete experimental campaign will be done to investigate how the concentration of weak particles inside aggregates will affect concrete mechanical performance. Results will be also correlated with theoretical-experimental modelling proposed by de Larrard et al. (AU)
