Abstract

This project aims to reinforce the collaborative research activities that have previously been established between Prof. Rubens Caram (University of Campinas - UNICAMP, Brazil) and Prof. Rian Dippenaar (University of Wollongong - UOW, Australia). The main scientific goal of this proposal is to investigate solid-solid phase transformations in titanium alloys using in situ observations in a high-temperature laser-scanning confocal microscope (HTSCM). It is intended to evaluate microstructure evolution of Ti alloys submitted to aging treatments to verify whether alpha-phase can be nucleated homogeneously and assisted by pseudo-spinodal decomposition. While UNICAMP team has appropriate facilities and knowledge that allow investigation of different Ti alloys, the UOW team has prior experience in the analysis of phase transformations in metallic alloys using HTSCM. Samples will be prepared and processed at UNICAMP and in situ aging heat treatments will be carried out in a HTSCM equipment at UOW. To the best of our knowledge, in situ observations of phase transformation in metastable beta-Ti alloys using HTSCM are very original and the potential research outcomes are aimed at clarifying several phenomena related to alpha-phase precipitation.
