Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) target spot: epidemiological aspects and control

Abstract

Corynespora cassiicola is the causal agent of the target spot in leaves of several cultivated species, especially cucumber, where reports of damage in greenhouse cultivation conditions have been very frequent. Due to the difficulty of disease management, related to the lack of information on the resistance of cultivars and the absence of registered pesticides for cucumber disease in Brazil, the objectives of this work will be to evaluate the aggressiveness of C. cassiicola isolates in cucumber genotypes; to evaluate the reaction of different cucumber genotypes to C. cassiicola isolates by epidemiological parameters of the disease (incubation period, latent period, infection frequency, lesion diameter, severity and conidia production per lesion area ) and biochemical responses of genotypes due to disease (enzymes chitinases, polyphenol oxidases and peroxidases and concentration of total soluble phenolic compounds); to verify the effect of fungicides in vitro on C. cassiicola and in vivo in the control of the cucumber target spot and to evaluate the effect of alternative products based on chitosan, phosphite and silicon in the control of the disease. The experiments of detecting the causal agent and in vitro sensitivity to fungicides will be carried out in the laboratory and the pathogenicity experiments of the C. cassiicola isolates on cucumber, reaction of cucumber genotypes to the target spot and in vivo control of the disease will be carried out in greenhouse.
