Abstract

Neonatal anoxia is a worldwide public health problem that can lead to permanent sequelae and is considered a major risk factor for the occurrence of various neurodevelopmental diseases, such as cerebral palsy, intellectual deficits, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and neurodevelopmental disorders. autistic spectrum, among others. The pathophysiological mechanisms triggered by oxygen deprivation in the developing brain are still not well established. In view of this, there is a need for further investigation regarding the mechanisms of injury triggered by neonatal anoxia, including glial and inflammatory changes, allowing for the amplification of the proposed therapeutic strategies that minimize the long-term sequelae. The objective of the present study is to verify if the present model of neonatal anoxia in rats causes alterations in the microglial response and in the production of cytokines and chemokines characteristic of inflammatory process, to investigate the influence of TLR4 in the activation of microglia and to explore the effects of photobiomodulation, whose anti-inflammatory action is proven, but its mechanisms still lack further investigation, in cell death and neuroinflammation due to neonatal anoxia, possibly mediated by TLR4. This study will certainly contribute effectively to a better understanding of the mechanisms of neurodegeneration present after oxygen deprivation in the immature brain and to the proposition of new therapeutic possibilities that minimize damage and sequelae in short and long terms.
