Abstract

Whilst the science from the State of São Paulo (and from Brazil) has grown exponentially in quantity in the past 20 years (both in terms of students and of scientific publications), a lot can still be done with regards to quality. The challenge currently faced is to enhance the quality of research and its social, economic and intellectual impact. There is no doubt that one of the best avenues to reach this outcome is through internationalisation of research, granting access to researchers from Sao Paulo to world-class institutions abroad. Research funding agencies such as the Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) play an important role in creating opportunities whilst encouraging and directing the research produced. The active participation of FAPESP in the Global Research Forum is a viable way to create connections with member agencies and participate in the global debate, setting the agenda for international scientific collaboration, exchanging best practices and using it as a bridge for collaborations with other research funding agencies.
