Abstract

Science Diplomacy (SD) explores the role of science and technological innovation in international affairs. As the recent war in Ukraine or China's use of 'high-tech and science' for diplomacy illustrate, SD is central to global politics today. Along with this, SD has become a very important research topic. However, there is a dearth of research on gender and other intersectional identities, in particular, regional identities based on the categories of global North and South. The lack of perspective on these identities in the research causes a serious shortcoming, especially as these identities directly impact on SD as a diplomatic practice. Against this background, the proposed exchange aims at enhancing research capacity and connections between the United Kingdom and Brazil through the study of gender and other intersectional identities of global North and South in SD. The exchange is built on the local expertise of the University of São Paulo (USP) on science and innovation diplomacy displayed through InnSciD SP, and of the University of Manchester which acts as the hub of the Commission on Science, Technology and Diplomacy (STAND) of the International Science Council's Division of History of Science and Technology (DHST). In addition, the exchange will build on FAPESP's Gender STI research project and Manchester-USP cross-institutional collaboration for NEWORLD@A, an ongoing European Research Council Advanced Grant (Horizon) 2020 project (2022-26) that explores data sharing and management in SD. By connecting FAPESP Gender STI scholars and Manchester-based scholars in NEWORLD@A, we aim to create research synergy between the two countries - and institutions acting as scholarly hubs for the study of SD - one representing global North (UK) and the other global South (Brazil). The synergy will strengthen our collaboration, which will prepare us for future funding applications. (AU)
