Abstract

The objective of this research project is to comprehend the different ways in which people who live with HIV/AIDS confront experiences of social suffering, specifically the ones produced in the context of mutual help shared within a social network of the internet. This analysis will be supported by theoretical contributions from the anthropology of suffering and the anthropology of emotions, as well as from a dialogue with the field of health, in general, and of mental health, in particular. This virtual ethnography will be conducted within a closed group of people living with HIV/AIDS on the social network Facebook. The fieldwork will be conducted from August 2018 through June 2019. The following research techniques will be employed for data collection: on-line participant observation, individual interviews, and document analysis of the content posted in the group's page. The information collected through these techniques will be registered in field journals, in audio recordings, and in text archives, respectively. The data will be processed using the software NVivo 11 Plus and subsequently analyzed and interpreted. Through the results of this study, we expect to offer a contribution for understanding the forms of social suffering and of agencies for confronting it among people who live with HIV/AIDS. Additionally, we hope to produce symbolic evidence that may promote the formulation of public policies and the humanization of care in health. (AU)
