Abstract

Although our knowledge about species and biological communities has increased significantly in the last decades, it is still necessary a great effort to obtain the information necessary for a better understanding of the effects of anthropogenic environmental changes on biodiversity. Anthropogenic habitat disturbances may affect species in various forms, with a high variation in their effects on different species and functional groups. This study has two main objectives: (1) assess the effects of prescribed fires on the species, functional and phylogenetic diversity of frog and lizard communities, as a way to provide subsidies for fire management in protected areas; and (2) assess the effects of the substitution of native forests by tree plantations on the species, functional and phylogenetic diversity of snake and frog communities, as a way to provide subsidies for the conservation of species and the management of landscapes in which native forests and tree plantations predominate. The knowledge resulting from this project will also subsidize the assessment of the conservation status of the studied amphibians and squamate reptiles and the definition of conservation actions. Three concomitant studies will be carried on, two related to the effects of fire on frog and lizard communities in the Cerrado (Estação Ecológica de Santa Bárbara, SP, and Estação Ecológica Serra Geral do Tocantins, TO, both using pitfall traps) and a third on the effects of the substitution of native forests by tree plantations on snake and frog communities in the Atlantic Forest (Fazenda Melhoramentos, Camaducaia, MG, using visual searches, accidental encounters and observations by local people). In all these studies we will use current methods to analyze data on species, functional and phylogenetic diversity. (AU)
