Acute phase proteins levels in horses exposed carbohydrate overload associated with cecal buffering

Abstract

Advances in the pathophysiology of equine laminitis have showed the inflammatory cascade as a primary factor and trigger of the early stages. It is known that horses subjected to carbohydrate (CHO) overload can develop laminitis and that this condition is due to changes in the bacterial of the gastrintestinal flora. Laminitis induces systemic changes in the acute phase protein (AFP) rates; however, there are few studies that use the proteinogram to characterize the inflammatory response during the development and early stages of this syndrome. The aim of this study is correlate PFA values with the evolution and clinical symptoms of horses exposed to carbohydrate overload and associated with intracecal buffer solution. Ten horses were submitted to CHO overload. Following eight hours a solution containing aluminum and magnesium hydroxide were administrated into the cecal lumen. The PFA rates will be measured from serum and plasma samples collected at time intervals prior to the administration of carbohydrate overload up to 72 hours after, by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and ELISA methods.
