Abstract

Nanotechnology has the potential to make an impact in agriculture through nanoencapsulation of pesticides, herbicides and agrochemicals resulting in precise dosage to the plants. Silver and copper nanoparticles are known to have potent antimicrobial activity against several pathogens. Although these nanoparticles have been greatly explored in biomedical applications, their uses in plant defense are still in the infancy. Metal nanoparticles can be synthesized by chemical, physical and biogenic routes. Biogenic synthesis of metal nanoparticles is considered cost effective and environmentally friend approach. In this direction, this project proposes the biogenic synthesis of silver and copper nanoparticles by using fungi, specifically white rot fungi, in a green approach. The surface of the biogenically synthesized silver or copper nanoparticles will be functionalized with nitric oxide (NO) donors, since NO is a potent antimicrobial agent. NO is an endogenous found molecule that controls several physiological processes in mammals and in plants, including plant defense against pathogens. Although NO-releasing metallic nanoparticles have been explored in biomedical fields, their uses in agriculture have not been explored. The obtained NO-releasing metal nanoparticles will be incorporated into essential oils, which have antimicrobial activity. Therefore, the goal of this project is to use a green approach to synthesize metal nanoparticles, coat their surface with the antimicrobial molecule NO, and incorporate the final nanoparticles in essential oils in agriculture applications for pest control. It is expected to reduce the pesticide applications and to increase the food security. (AU)
