Low-cost sensors as a tool to reduce air pollution on nursery and primary schools - impact on childhood asthma

Abstract

Recent studies concluded that there is a pressing need to implement strategies to improve indoor air quality(IAQ) in nursery and primary schools. Accordingly, providing the schools with tools to measure/alert airpollutants' levels to make them self-sufficient in the reduction of indoor air pollution (IAP) is vital and enablesthe mitigation of the related health impacts. Thus, the use of low-cost sensors arise as a new strategic tool tomeasure IAQ in schools. As far as known, there are no publications on IAQ assessment using low-cost sensors onnursery and primary schools. Thus, this study mainly intends to contribute for the development of tools to helpthe schools' responsible to manage IAQ and to assess the effective reduction of IAP levels and of its impact onchildhood asthma. The expected results are to i) validate and calibrate low-cost sensors for IAQ monitoringproviding the schools with tools to effectively reduce IAP; ii) develop IAP exposure models; and iii) assess theimpact of IAP reduction on childhood asthma as well as provide an early asthma diagnosis (children examinedfrom 3 years old).
