Abstract

Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant source of nanostructures, energy and high value-added components, which can supply the demands of the actual society in a more sustainable and less pollutant way as compared to the technologies currently available. Carbohydrates extracted from plant cell wall can be used to produce biofuels. Besides this, these carbohydrates are highly organized within the cell wall, forming cellulose fibers (CF), nanocrystals (CNC) and nanofibrils (CNF). Other important component in these substrates is lignin, which possess antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-UV properties, besides containing phenolic rings in its structure, which can act as building blocks to the synthesis of other molecules. Finally, organic molecules of high added-value can be extracted from these natural substrates and forwarded to various applications. The purpose of this project is to study the fractionation of a few plant biomasses, such as elephant grass, sugarcane bagasse and eucalyptus pulp, aiming the extraction of cellulose fibers, nanofibrils and nanocrystals, and also of lignin and extractives, which can be applied in the preparation of materials with improved properties. The methodology is based in preliminary treatments with diluted acid (H2SO4) or alkali (NaOH) to separate hemicellulose and lignin and also in the removal of extractives with solvents and supercritical CO2. CNCs will be isolated from the pretreated substrates by acid hydrolysis; CNFs will be obtained by oxidation and mechanical treatments, while lignin nanoparticles (NL) will be prepared by ultrasonication, shearing or precipitation induced by solvent exchange. Cellulose structures will be used in the preparation of lightweight materials and of films to recover different types of cellulose substrates. Considering the lightweight materials, cellulose properties (low toxicity, biodegradability, renewable source and chemically tunable surface) will be explored, while in the films, these properties will be associated to those of lignin (UV-absorption, antioxidant and bactericidal properties). NL antioxidant and photoabsorber capacities will also be investigated by adding these nanoparticles to solar creams and evaluating the final properties of the final product. (AU)
