Abstract

Abstract: Although mainly used in pharmaceutical applications, glycerin, a co-product of the biodiesel production chain, shows great potential for the production of solid biofuels, when added to the mixture of raw materials used in the production of briquettes and pellets. Therefore, this proposal aims to evaluate the energy yield of biomass from first-generation and second-generation bioethanol production, either sugar cane bagasse or lignocellulosic biomass (or both), with the addition of crude glycerin during pellet production. The experiments will be conducted in three trials at the Laboratory of Agricultural Machinery and Mechanization of FCAT - UNESP, Campus de Dracena-SP. The raw materials, sugar cane bagasse and lignocellulosic biomass (resulting from the production process of second-generation bioethanol from sugar cane), will be purchased from the Caeté Plant, while crude glycerin will be purchased from Cargill. In the first experiment, a completely randomized design will be used, analyzes will be performed with sugar cane bagasse mixed using four different glycerin percentages (0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% by mass), with 5 replications of 100-gram pellets. In the second experiment, a completely randomized design will be used, analyzes will be performed with lignocellulosic residual sugar cane biomass (resulting from second-generation bioethanol production), used in combination with four different glycerin percentages (0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% by mass), with 5 replications of 100-gram pellets. In the third experiment, the design will be completely randomized and arranged in a 3 × 4 factorial scheme, corresponding to three ratios of sugar cane bagasse to lignocellulosic biomass (resulting from second-generation bioethanol production) of 75:25, 50:50 and 25:75, respectively, and associated with four different glycerin percentages (0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% by mass), with 4 replications of 100-gram pellets. After the preparation of the materials they will be sent for characterization and realization of the physical, chemical, immediate, elementary, and energetic properties, and also the analysis of mechanical durability and quantitative determination of sugars will be completed. To evaluate the energy yield of the pellets, determinations will be made for three variables: upper calorific value, lower calorific value; and energy density. (AU)
