Abstract

In this project, we propose to research and develop a cloud platform that provides IDRS for coupling 3DRSs in a WEB-based environment. This is the R&D stage of FAPESP's PIPE Stage 1 preliminary results (NTU Project: Proc. No. 2016 / 00993-8).The recent technological advances in robot technology (both sensing and communication systems for non-industrial robots) and the adoption of robotics in the services sector are factors that are driving the growth of Cloud Robotics market. It is now possible to enhance the performance of robots by integrating them with AIaaS cloud systems (e.g., IBM's Watson). The global Cloud Robotics market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 32.4% during the forecast period of 2016 to 2024 (from $1.38 billion in 2015 to $21.9 billion in 2024). The new generation of robot designs and the multidisciplinary aspect to generate technologies that connect hardware and software point to robotics as a key innovation driver. This depicted scenario of advances in software and robotics technologies addresses the challenge of producing robust solutions for effective robotic applications, a barrier recognized by the robot manufacturers themselves and that has not yet been resolved. As a global response to this challenge we at NTU are proposing not only to develop a cloud infrastructure to provide robust robotic application solutions, but also as a strategic resource to improve education, training and technology empowerment. In this sense, NTU is disrupting education through the democratization of robotics and the empowerment of 21st century technology. The methodology deals with the management and execution of the project (we use Agile Methodology), the cloud architecture solution and training of the team (we will talk with professionals who work in the sector to come along to discuss the latest updates, findings and solutions, and we also will a series of complementary ways of assessing the training needs of the team), and the execution of scientific research and technological development plan (we will proceed with the work taking into account the Main Researcher's know-how, the researcher has extensive experience in operation, management and development of large-scale IT projects). As a result, we expect an user-centric cloud infrastructure that will integrate cloud technologies (computing and storage), Integrated Development Environments (online IDEs technologies) and 3D Robotic Simulators (3DRSs browser-based technologies) focused on creating facilities for the use of assistive and collaborative robot applications in services, healthcare, education, manufacturing process and entertainment. The potential impacts of this work go beyond the improvements in the production chain, in terms of increase productivity and quality. Some of the expected impacts are as follows: changes in organizational structures and drastic changes in career directions (design HRIs, robotic applications development, can create new work roles). In order to execute this project, we have increased the current research active staff levels in IT Project Management, know-how in robotic applications and legal issues (for digital and creative businesses). This team will also have support in specialist functions from the centers of excellence in Pediatric Healthcare and Education. These specialists are members of the teams that work on specific Pilot Programs (a scaled-down user experience study). In addition, we plan on hiring specialists to address specific demands related to cloud services and system integration. In terms of infrastructure and mentoring in business management and strategy, the team also has the support of the Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Technology, an incubator where the startup is headquartered.
