The research project described in this document proposes to develop scientific instrumentationon high energy nuclear physics research within the ALICE collaboration at the Large HadronCollider (LHC) of the European Centre of Nuclear Research (CERN). The proposed researchprogram intends to develop gaseous particle detectors for the ALICE experiment that can alsobe used in the UFABC local research facility known as CEM (Multi-user Experimental Center),where they can be used as position sensitive X-Ray detectors. This project can also profit froma synergy with another ongoing instrumentation project supported by FAPESP, the SAMPACHIP, in development at the University of São Paulo to be used as the readout electronics of themain gaseous detectors of the ALICE experiment.This project would be of a proposal for a charged particle detector based on the Gas ElectronMultiplier technology (GEM) in association with an upgrade project for the ALICE experiment.This upgrade project, known as FoCal (Forward Calorimeter), aims for the construction of a newcalorimeter in the forward rapidity and the GEMs of this project would provide charged particleidentification to it. Since the FoCal is still in the approval phase, this part of the project willfocus mainly in computer simulations for the new detector.Another goal of this project, which will also benefit from the simulations mentioned before,is the development of a GEM detector prototype to be used as X-Rays detector in spectrometryexperiments conducted in the UFABC CEM. To achieve this goal, the project will benefit fromthe collaboration of researchers that are experts in the field where the prototype will be used.Last but not least, this project will help in the consolidation of the research infrastructurestarted with a previous project also supported by FAPESP (AU)
