Abstract

By analyzing the "sebastianist" pamphlets which circulated in early seventeenth-century England, this project aims to study the English reception of news about King Sebastian, the Battle of Ksar El-Kebir, and the Sebastian of Venice. Looking into their adaptations as well as their presence in a broader scene of the representation of the Iberian world, in general, and of Portugal and King Sebastian, in particular, the research will seek to: 1) situate the founding disputes of the "lettered sebastianism" from a transnational and connected perspective; 2) discuss the Anglo-Iberian relations and the English representations of Iberia by analyzing both the construction of a millenarianist and imperial discourse and the tensions caused by the Iberian Union and the Spanish Hapsburg expansion, focusing in the Portuguese case; 3) analyze these documents and representations looking into the English and Anglo-Iberian political-religious conflicts. In addition to conference presentations and articles submission, one of the aimed results and outputs is to systematize and edit the primary source research in order to make it freely available on the internet for further research projects.
