Abstract

Currently, production processes based on sustainable development and low-carbon use have expanded the interest for eco-friendly polymer composites. For these composites the natural origin of reinforcement fillers is one of the determining factors of their choice. The use of micro and nanofillers extracted from residues of mineral and agroindustry activities for the development of environmentally friendly composite materials has aroused great interest in both academia and productive sectors. At the same time, the attention of the globalized world to the final destination of the product after its shelf life and the application of the "3 Rs" of sustainability (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) has driven the research and the development of environmentally friendly composite materials. In this context, Brazil occupies a privileged position in relation to other countries, due to the abundance and diversity of raw materials from natural resource, and residues from mineral and agroindustry activities available for the production of environmentally friendly materials. In this project, diverse micro and nanofillers will be extracted from waste of mineral and agroindustry activities and modified, as a measure to guarantee the homogeneous dispersion into polymeric matrix. The modifications will be carried out through functionalization by grafting or chemical reduction, both induced by ionizing radiation. The modified micro- and nanofillers will be incorporated into conventional and biodegradable polymer matrix by solution mixing and mechanical mixing in the molten state techniques. Environmentally friendly composite material will be developed for application in the smart packaging, automotive, civil construction, biomaterials, and conductive materials segments. (AU)
