Development of a methodology for the optimization of supercritical CO2-assisted impregnation of polymers with natural extracts

Abstract

Polymers able to release natural extracts are relevant systems because they have potential applications in many fields such as food packaging, wound care, cosmetics and agriculture. The polymer protects the extract from degradation, and exhibits the extract bioactivity. The supercritical CO2-assited impregnation (SCI) process is a promising alternative to other manufacturing processes to prepare extract-releasing polymeric products, since it operates at mild temperatures and allows recovering products free of solvent. While the SCI of a single molecule in a polymer is well understood, working with multicompound extracts (natural extracts) is challenging due to their complex composition. The goal of the present proposal is to establish a methodology for the optimization of the SCI of polymers with natural extracts. Firstly, the SCI of model mixtures of two compounds will be performed to identify and rationalize specific phenomena that occur during the impregnation of a mixture. Then, the selection criteria for the polymer/extract pairs and the optimization of the operational conditions will be determined to achieve the following requirements: a high extract loading, a composition of the loaded extract similar to the crude extract, and a minimal change of the original polymer properties. To do so, the impregnation of natural extracts will be carried out in polymers with different physicochemical properties varying the operational conditions. Finally, the extract release profile of the successfully impregnated samples will be investigated and their bioactivity will be compared to the one of the crude extracts. The methodology will help future users of the SCI technology in the development of extracts-releasing polymers, and should propelling the valorization of Brazilian natural extracts. (AU)
