Abstract
Ensuring access to safe water is a challenge for sanitation company managers. There have been more adversities lately. Studies indicate the growing presence of several pollutants that can't be removed by traditional treatment methods, ending up in drinking water, such as caffeine. At first, this substance is harmless to humans, but its presence in water might also indicate the presence of other contaminants. Hydrodynamic cavitation is one of the alternative techniques to traditional water treatment, which has been explored in several studies. The cavitation occurs when the liquid pressure drops below the vapor pressure, causing the formation of bubbles. If the pressure increases, the bubbles implode, causing high-velocity waves and microjets to propagate. The generation of highly reactive free radicals, along with bubble collapse, provides the conditions for water disinfection and for the degradation of unwanted compounds in water. The objective of this research project is to confirm the efficiency of a cavitating jet apparatus to degrade caffeine in water. (AU)
