Abstract

Food production in the world is reduced by about 30 to 40 due to pests and diseases, resulting in about US430 billions loss. The most frequently used control methods are chemical molecules that result in unwanted consequences such as pest and pathogen resistance against the molecules, environmental consequences and negative impact in human and other animal' health. RNAi-based pest control is a new concept being developed by several public and private research centers and represents a technology able to target specific pests and diseases, without most of the unwanted consequences brought by chemical molecules used nowadays. The aim of this project is to identify candidate genes for the controle of the soybean stink bug Euschistus heros through RNAi, for the development of silencing molecules that confer resistance to soybean agains this important agricultural pest.
