Abstract

The large number of shear strength models developed mostly deal with the analysis of beams or punching capacity of slabs. However, to loads distributed in small areas close to the support, which is often the case in slab bridge decks, there is a higher concentration of support reactions in the region closest to the loaded area. For this reason, an effective width is generally adopted in the one-way shear strength analyses in these cases. Regard to this, many works have been developed evaluating the level of accuracy and precision of different calculation models combined with the most common approaches of effective width definition. However, most of these studies were performed with slabs of greater thickness than those practiced in projects in Brazil and using a deterministic approach in the calibration of calculation models. For this reason, this project proposes a more adequate study of the national practice of projects regarding the use of slabs of smaller thickness (200-250 mm) and using probabilistic tools for the development of reliable calculation models for this type of loading. To this end, it is intended to develop an experimental program representative of the national practice of bridge designs that supports the development of more suitable approaches to analyse the shear strength to partially distributed loads close to the support. The study also includes numerical simulation of experimental models and parametric analysis of calibrated models, using the finite element method, to further investigate aspects such as the thickness increase near the supports on shear strength of bridge slabs.
