Multi-User Computing Laboratory

Abstract

ICTS researchers have repeatedly demonstrated the demand for new spaces to meet the computational needs associated with ICTS research. In fact, only the number of graduate students in the unit has grown substantially in recent years, reaching 239 regular and 85 special students. In addition to these, there is the demand of students of Scientific Initiation (CI) of the undergraduate courses of the unit (of the order of a few dozen) and the researchers themselves (38).Among the most commonly reported needs are: need for research staff access to computers, need for various computer simulations, need for computers to prepare presentations, need for writing scientific articles, access to high-performance computers ( server with GPUs) and correlates. It is agreed that there is a need to create spaces that can be used for such purposes.Given the extremely restricted physical area within the ICTS, it would be impossible for Campus administration to meet these desires for each teacher or research group individually, since such care would not only run into the absence of multiple spaces, but would also imply eventual underutilization of equipment that could be used more economically in a shared way.In this context, the need points to support research through the constitution of multiuser spaces focused on the shared computational developments of research in ICTS.
