Abstract

Although originally described as tumor suppressor, PTEN (phospatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome ten), has been studied by researches related to cellular processes such as cell growing, cell proliferation, cell survival, metabolism and cell migration, with a potential modulatory role on neurogenesis, synaptic plasticity and, more recently, inflammation. The location of PTEN inside the cell can be both cytosolic and nuclear as its functions seem to depend on where PTEN is located within the cell. This project will focus on PTEN role about neuroinflammation and it has as objetive to evaluate the possible effects of PTEN compartmentalization (nucleus/cytosol) and PTEN inhibition in the presence of inflammation induced by lypopolysacharide (LPS) in primary glia and mixed primary glia and neuronal culture. The better understanding of PTEN involvement on signaling pathways direct or indirectly involved on neuroinflammation could lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies for more effective treatments against diseases associated with PTEN deletion or mutation, neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
