Ecosystem services applied for managing urban conservation units: technical guidelines for public policies and environmental planning instruments integration

Abstract

The management of conservation units, especially in urban areas, face major challenges dealing with economic development and conservation. The São Paulo municipality, with the increased urban growth over the last decades, presents conflicts in the proposition, conservation and enhancement of its green areas. The conservation units in the city of São Paulo represent a profitable object for the discussion of better integrating environmental policies tools for contributing to the conservation of ecosystem integrity and ecological processes. For protecting the integrity and management of urban protected areas, the main objective is to propose technical guidelines to strengthen the tiering guided by environmental planning instruments in the taking decision of urban planning, considering different scales of supply and demand for ecosystem services. The research approach is an exploratory and applied investigation in the environmental science as well as environmental and urban planning field. The methodology involves: bibliographic research, documental research, field visit, spatial data analysis, interviews and focus group. The expected results are: construction of practical and easy-to-use recommendations to support the conservation units management and the environmental planning instruments applied to the decision making of plans, programs and projects, which interfere in the selected conservation units; preparation of a summary for policy makers about conservation units management in urban areas; a technical guide for the management council of selected conservation units aiming at disclosing the research and its application for society with the main results obtained, maps and frameworks; synthesis guide of priority ecosystem services of the selected conservation units. This project involves two main themes (Theme 4 and Theme 10) of the Fapesp Call and the strategic objective of the Aichi targets. (AU)
