Abstract

The transport systems in Brazil is strongly based on the road modality that has the main vector flow by trucks. The need of modernization of the highways is urgent and should continue in parallel to the discussions on the adoption of transportation systems more distributed with other modalities. In this sense, smart roads are the next step to correct problems found on the main highways of the world, and it is already a reality in many developed countries. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), implement a set of actions to handle vehicle traffic more efficiently in a highway. In general, these services use advanced information and communication to improve security and mobility. The possibilities of using these systems, aiming at improving the infrastructure of highways, has more space in the actual discussions of new road projects in Brazil. It is worth mentioning that overloaded vehicles are dangerous for users of the road system and also responsible for most of the complications and damages caused for roads and bridges. To remedy this problem and facilitate surveillance, the high speed weighing system, or simply HS-WIM as they are known (acronym for High Speed - Weigh In Motion), aims to avoid the excess of vehicles that eventually would be directed to weighing in conventional scales of inspection. This kind of system is capable of determining the axels weight of a truck in the operating speed of a highway, without being interrupted by performing a previous screening to detect possible irregularities and directing penalties for identified vehicles with nonconformities for a more accurate verification at an appropriate location. The use of HS-WIN systems used in Europe, United States and Japan has not so far been a successful experience in Brazil, mainly due to the characteristics of the climate and the infrastructure of the roads. In this way, it is necessary to develop a data acquisition, conditioning and signal processing system, dedicated to the characteristics of Brazilian highways, allowing the country to enjoy this type of technology. In order, this project has as main objective the development of an electronic module (metrological board) that allows to implement a system of data acquisition for weighing in movement in high speed of cargo trucks.
