Effects of the mindfulness-based food awareness training intervention (Mindfulness-Based Eating Awareness Training - MB-EAT) in patients after bariatric surgery: a randomized clinical trial

Abstract

Bariatric surgery has been identified as an effective procedure for the treatment of severe obesity. However, regaining weight 1 to 2 years after surgery is common. Traditional strategies (diet and exercise) to prevent weight recovery have not been effective in the long term, making alternative interventions, such as those based on mindfulness, necessary. This is a randomized clinical trial, whose objective is to evaluate the effects of mindfulness-based food awareness training (MB-EAT) on anthropometric, metabolic, genetic and behavioral indicators in patients after bariatric surgery with weight gain. It will be performed with adult patients who underwent bariatric surgery and post-surgical follow-up at HC-FMRP-USP. Patients will be randomized to a program based on the MB-EAT (12 sessions lasting 4 months, with 10 weekly sessions, 1 biweekly and 1 monthly session) and with similar guidelines on nutrition. The normality of the variables will be assessed by the Shapiro-Wilk test. For the comparison between groups in T0, the student's t test will be used, if the variable is parametric and the Mann Whitney test, if not parametric. To compare the times in the same group (Intervention and Control) the ANOVA test for repeated measures will be used. To verify associations between the quantitative variables of the study, Spearman or Pearson correlation will be used. The significance level of 5% will be adopted. The analyzes will be done in SPSS version 23. (AU)
