Communication and provisioning of resources in optical networks

Abstract

With the persistently growing popularity of internet traffic, the telecom operators are forced to provide high-capacity, cost-efficient, and performance-adaptive connectivity solutions to fulfill the requirements and increase their returns. However, single-mode optical networks, which make up the core of the Internet, gradually reached physical transmission limits, driving space-division multiplexing, considered a potential technology for increasing transmission capacity. However, most of the requirements for the implementation of these networks are open challenges, such as optical path selection algorithms, protection techniques, crosstalk impact between cores, use of different levels of modulation, adequate number of cores per fiber, resource allocation, switch complexity, traffic grooming, and energy consumption. In addition, the great problem of adapting existing networks to the space-division multiplexing scenario involves operational and financial problems. In this context, in summary, the crucial problem to be addressed by this research project is the implementation of mechanisms to enable the implementation of SDM-EONs in order to increase the capacity of the Internet core.
