Abstract

In the last six years, Brazilian aquaculture production grew by 31%, from 578,800 t (2014) to 758,006 t (2019). Tilapia production alone accounted for 57% (432,149 t) of all Brazilian fish farming in 2019. Placing the country in 4th position among the largest tilapia producers. Thus, this growing aquaculture sector has challenged the development of sustainable strategies to improve the use of food, control diseases and reduce the use of antibiotics in animal production. This could be minimized with biofloc technology (BFT), which could improve net productivity by 8-43% for some aquaculture species, when compared to non-biofloc systems. Based on the evidence that suggests biofloc as a symbiotic system (probiotic + prebiotic), the company SMBr Technology LTDA tested a combined biofloc feeding system, reducing commercial feed consumption by 70%. Additionally, the production cycle was reduced by 15 days, keeping the growth curve within acceptable parameters for the species studied, tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Thus, producing antibiotic-free animal protein for human consumption. However, we raise the hypothesis that, if biofloco is better characterized, the technology and its by-products can be improved by modulating the constitution of the biofloc microbiota. Thus, this project aims to characterize the biofloc and produce symbiotic nutritional supplements for the aquaculture industry and contribute to the production of antibiotic-free animal protein and this is in accordance with the World Health Organization (2017), which encourages the increase research and development of new technologies to combat antimicrobial resistance and the expected global probiotic ($ 136.5 billion) and prebiotic ($ 7 billion) market by 2024.
