Abstract

Diseases attributed to occupational exposure to asbestos are thoroughly published in the literature. One of the most well known study is that one published by Selikoff et all. who studied more than 17,000 workers exposed to these fibers. Here in Brazil, there is no such an epidemiological study covering a significant number of individuals, although asbestos have been mined and handled since more than 50 years. The present study will analyze the morbidity and mortality among around 10,000 Brazilian workers occupationally exposed to crisotila type fibers, in mining operations, during variable time span, and will cover the period of 1940 to 1996. Each of the available worker will be submitted to a clinical evaluation with the emphasis on occupational history and cumulative exposure; to the radiological investigation under International Labor Office Criteria (ILO - revision 1980) and in case of doubt, will be submitted to the high resolution computerized tomography; to spirometry under American Thoracic Society criteria; and to the diffusion capacity and exercise tests. The mortality will be investigated through Pan American Health Organization data collection procedure, already used and tested in the interamerican mortality investigation. The data will be analyzed through survival analysis methodology and life table procedures, on the historical and concurrent cohort type study. The determination of risks will be established as dependent variables and the time exposure differential as explanatory variables. Finally, it is important to point out that the present study is an interinstitutional research putting together the three major universities of the state of São Paulo (UNICAMP, USP, UNIFESP), coordinated by the area of occupational health of UNICAMP.
