Abstract

In this project, the decomposition reaction of potassium peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in basic medium containing cobalt(II)/EDTA will be used in the development and application of a chemiluminescent analytical method to determine the total content of oxidizable compounds in tea samples, herbal extracts medicinal products, wines, beers, fruit juices and drugs, samples not investigated with this reaction. The results obtained will be compared with the values of total antioxidant capacity found with the spectrophotometric method based on the consumption of the free radical derived from 2,2'-azino (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTSÏ+). Another novel chemiluminescent analytical method, based on the thermal decomposition of 2,22-azobis -2-methylpropionamidine dihydrochloride (AAPH) in the presence of luminol, will be used to quantify the antioxidant capacity of medicinal herbs and drugs, samples not yet investigated with this objective. These results will be compared with the values of the total antioxidant capacity obtained with the ABTS Ï + method and correlated with the total polyphenol content (using reagent Folin - Ciocalteu), since polyphenols are responsible for the antioxidant capacity of plant matrices. In addition, it is noteworthy that both methods to be developed (PMS and AAPH) have not yet been described, have low detection limits and minimal consumption of reagents, which is of great importance from an environmental point of view.
