Towards sustainable zirconia recycled from milling waste and boosted by glass infiltration for restorative use, and of the development of strong, graded, and aging resistant multilayered zirconia blocks

Abstract

In JP-2 we propose the synthesis of aging resistant, strong and adhesive-friendly polycrystalline multilayered ceramics for monolithic use and to develop a zirconia recycling method to be boosted by glass infiltration in multilayered systems. Our efforts that culminated in prostheses framework developments of JP-1 are called GAP 1. In GAPS 2 and 3 proposed for JP-2, we aim to produce blocks of isolated pristine zirconia powders (3Y-TZP, 4Y-PSZ, and 5Y-PSZ) and their combinations as bilayered (3Y-TZP +4Y-PSZ, 3Y-TZP+5Y-PSZ, and 4Y-PSZ and 5Y-PSZ) and multilayered (3Y-TZP+4Y-PSZ+5Y-PSZ) blocks to be milled as crowns and subjected to physicochemical characterizations and fatigued in graded and non-graded controls. In GAP 3, our aim is to develop a hydrothermal pressure-assisted method to refine 3Y-TZP powder from block-remainders, trashed by commercial labs, and recycle it for restorative use. We shall initiate production of recycled 3Y-TZP and apply it for monolayered, bilayered and multilayered disc-shaped structures, using the group rationale described in GAP 2. Thorough characterization will be performed for controls, graded and a recently developed boron glass infiltration composition. Once we obtain discs from recycled 3Y-TZP with mechanical properties for 3-unit span prostheses (ISO 6872:2015), or higher due to glass infiltration, and with cytotoxicity tests corroborating safe use, we expect that at the end of the 5-year grant we may use the background learned from block production (GAP 2) to apply for recycled 3Y-TZP to fabricate prostheses for needy patients (GAP 3). We have added national and international associate research members that will collaborate with state-of-the-art intellectual and methodology input. Pilot studies are presented to corroborate the feasibility of the current JP-2 grant proposal. (AU)
