Abstract

In this project we intend to explore the reactivity of formamide (HCONH2) as an alternative pathway of CO2 incorporation to produce renewable polymers, investigating different catalyzed reactions, including metallo-, photo- and bio-catalysis. Initially, we intend to study the feasibility of producing formamide using CO2 as a C1 carbon source, using hydrogen (H2) as a reducing agent and ammonia for an amidation step under metallic catalysis. In the second part, methodological studies will be carried out incorporating the chemistry of carbamoyl radicals (* CONH2) and their use in the synthesis of new monomers. The evaluation of the formation of these monomers will be made from the addition reaction of the carbamoyl radical to olefins, thus determining the scope and limitations of the methodology. In the third stage of the work, the aim is to use this new series of monomers to produce new polymers through chemical or enzymatic polymerization with different diols and diamines. Finally, the aim is to develop a new synthetic approach for biopolymers in which all their carbons come from renewable sources, having as a key step of this study the exploitation of the reactivity of formamide.
