Abstract

Cancer epidemiology is a growing area in Veterinary Medicine. The Laboratory of Experimental and Comparative Oncology of the Department of Pathology at FMVZ-USP has also been dedicated to carrying out studies on the epidemiology of animal cancer. This is also one of the lines of research included in the CEPID proposal in Comparative and Translational Oncology, recently submitted and under analysis by FAPESP. In this context, the creation of animal cancer registries is of great importance. In 2013, the first animal cancer registry in South America was created at FMVZ-USP. To better record animal neoplasms, a coding system is needed. The Global Initiative for Veterinary Cancer Surveillance (GIVCS) created a group of researchers to develop a coding system for canine neoplasms similar to the human ICDO-3 system. Dr Chiara Palmieri, a veterinarian and pathologist at the University of Queensland, actively participated in the development of the Vet-ICDO-canine 1 system, recently published in the journal Cancers. Dr Chiara agreed to come to Brazil to disseminate the system to veterinary pathologists and, in this way, increase the registration of animal cancers in our country. (AU)
