Abstract

This project proposal aims to generate critical and unprecedented information on wood stocks in production forests undergoing a second harvest cycle in the Brazilian Amazon. In the first phase, the project intends to carry out the 2nd cycle harvest in an area harvesting in the past under two methods: Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) and Conventional Logging (CL) for experimental purposes. In addition, it is intended to monitor and collect information before, during and after forest management on a business scale. The study sites are located in the towns of Belterra and Paragominas (PA), Itacoatiara (AM) and Santa Carmen (MT), in the states of Pará, and Amazonas Itacoatiara were managed respectively in 1979, 1993 and 1996. Finally, the project in this first stage, it intends to carry out a forest inventory in another three or four areas managed in the early 1990s. In the second stage, the main information provided during data collection from these locations will be disseminated by academia (universities), forestry professionals and the timber industry. With this, we seek to promote the updating of regulations related to the guidelines for harvesting 2nd cycle wood in the Brazilian Amazon based on the results achieved. Then, the list of the most abundant commercial forest species in 2nd cycle production forests will be used in initiatives aimed at disseminating their use by market operators, engineers, architects and in the domestic civil construction markets. The actions of this project also include capacity building and training of the main groups of wood buyers in the civil construction markets on the uses and characteristics of these species. (AU)
