Abstract

Emerging and reemerging diseases are a public health concern in Brazil and, due to several factors, have a great impact on the Amazon region. This region is characterized by great biodiversity and it is largely populated by a socially vulnerable population. In addition, it has been suffering from recent anthropological activities that promote environmental degradation. In fact, official data showed that deforestation in the Amazon in 2021 was the highest in the last 10 years, threatening the survival of traditional communities and contributing to the intensification of global warming. Furthermore, it is believed that the degradation of the Amazon may favor the spread of viruses and the emergence of new pathogens. Data from our research group have shown an increase in the circulation of the Mayaro virus (MAYV) in degraded areas of the municipality of Coari in association with oil extraction and deforestation activities. In addition, in the Carajás region in the state of Pará, we observed a significant increase in cases of infection by Leishmaniasis and Oropouche virus in areas affected by mining activities. Thus, in this project, the creation of the PAMPA network is proposed, which aims to assess how deforestation activities caused by the resurfacing of the BR-319 in the state of Amazonas and mining in the Carajás can impact the spread of emerging viruses in humans, small vertebrates and arthropod vectors. In an innovative and ambitious project, we will integrate a multidisciplinary team to identify emerging viral diseases and map diseases/agents prevalent in humans, small mammals and hematophagous insects in regions impacted and not impacted by human action. This project will promote the strengthening of network research and will help public health centers to prepare more quickly against these pathogens. (AU)
