Abstract

Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic alteration that consists of the presence of an extra chromosome in pair 21 and this factor can cause phenotype alterations that vary in cognitive, cardiac and motor alterations, among others, with a series of consequences for the individual. Recent estimates indicate that there are currently around 300,000 people with DS in Brazil, in a proportion of 1 in every 800 to 1000 births. There is a timid intellectual production on physical fitness and its relationship with the health of this population. In the same way, some productions have characterized the metabolic profile (metabolomics) of these individuals, which could improve the understanding of changes in physical fitness. This project aims to analyze the relationship between physical fitness and metabolism in people with DS. Sixty individuals with Down syndrome will be recruited at APAE-Belém to undergo physical and metabolomic fitness assessments. The correlations between the physical fitness variables and the metabolome will be evaluated to define an evaluation protocol for the population in question that allows an early diagnosis of impairment and, consequently, a better intervention. Our main hypotheses are that there is a relationship between motor coordination and physical fitness in people with DS and that there are biomarkers that can contribute to the early identification of these changes. We intend to characterize the metabolomic profile in people with DS and identify biomarkers related to motor performance and physical fitness, allowing early diagnosis of motor impairments related to this syndrome, aggravated by a sedentary lifestyle.
