Cracks detection in railroad tracks using electromechanical impedance measurements and wave propagation

Abstract

The present research comprises the development of a new methodology for crack detection in rails combining experimental measurements of electromechanical impedance (EMI) and both flexural and longitudinal waves. Piezoelectric transducers are used for measuring the EMI and waves. The approach considers theoretical investigations to evaluate the wave propagation in beam-like structure considering periodic elements to represent the sleepers. Optimal frequencies will be identified to excite the structure taking into account the cracks position and severity. The proposal includes to develop damage detection indexes considering both EMI and waves. The research project considers a strong interaction between researchers from the São Paulo and Pará States.
