Abstract

The demand for water in Brazil has been growing continuously over the years, with emphasis on urban supply, industry and, mainly, irrigated agriculture. In this context, groundwater sources are considered a good alternative for water supply, as they are less susceptible to contamination and climatic variations when compared to surface sources. However, if the exploitation of groundwater is not properly managed, knowing the withdrawals of water through wells and, mainly, the rate of water renewal or recharge, there will be a great possibility of overexploitation and/or compromising quality. To analyze the conditions of renewal and recharge of aquifers, this work aims to conduct a comparative study in specific areas in different biomes of Brazil (Amazon and Cerrado). The method used will be the, water table fluctuation (WTF), considering the history of the monitoring carried out and the specific yield obtained by pumping test or by undisturbed samples. The percentages of recharge in relation to total precipitation will be compared and discussed considering the peculiarities of the two areas. Finally, we intend to discuss the structure and minimum conditions for the measurement of recharge associated with the management of groundwater resources. (AU)
