Development of films and hydrogels containing terpenes or derivative oligomers for active packaging and multifunctional medical devices applications

Abstract

This project includes two research fronts in multifunctional polymeric materials. The first of them will focus on packaging capable of enhancing food preservation, reducing losses and cross-contamination. In a connected way, the second front will address bioactive medical devices and their potential for mitigating public health problems related to microbial infections. The objective is to develop a technological platform involving the synthesis, characterization and processing of biopolymers containing terpenes or derived oligomers for such applications. Therefore, different synthetic routes and strategies for incorporating terpene bioactive compounds into polymeric matrices produced on a large scale will be investigated, obtaining films and photocrosslinkable hydrogels. The physical and functional properties related to the intended applications will be evaluated, in addition to a morphological and structural investigation. Additionally, preliminary studies on the processing of these materials will also be conducted to broaden the spectrum of potential applications. This project is expected to bring sustainable innovations in materials with improved performances to improve food security, health and population well-being. (AU)
