Abstract

Psychiatric disorders are among the main causes of socio-occupational disability in western countries and their impact grows every year. Most of these psychiatric disorders begin in childhood or adolescence, with about one in ten children worldwide diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder. However, little investment in research is devoted to the study of mental disorders in this age group. Very little is known about the risk and protective factors in the trajectories related to the origin and course of these disorders. The investigation of these trajectories can bring important advances in the treatment and, mainly, in the prevention of these disorders. A total of 9,957 families from 57 schools in Porto Alegre and São Paulo were interviewed. Of these families, 2,511 participants were selected at the baseline (2010-2011), when information about them and their families was collected, especially parents and siblings. About 2,000 participants were reassessed three years later and 1,800 six years later. The present project plans to present the objectives, methods and justification for the reassessment of these participants in the 10-year follow-up. The main objective of this project is to seek environmental, genetic, neuropsychological and neuroimaging information from the aforementioned cohort in order to investigate the normal and abnormal trajectory of neurodevelopment, in addition to investigating risk and protective factors that may be related to mental health-related outcomes in childhood, adolescence and early adulthood. The aim of this project is to generate knowledge about neurobiological pathways of typical and atypical development and to identify and validate predictors capable of informing risk criteria to advance mental health prevention strategies.
