ReGammend: a recommendation system for personalized gamification in education

Abstract

One of the main problems faced in educational contexts is keeping students engaged when using educational systems. An alternative widely studied in recent years is the use of gameful approaches (e.g., gamification) to improve the student experience. Although this approach provides promising results, the literature still shows some negative effects of gamification on students' experience. One of the main hypotheses for these recurring negative effects is that it is necessary to personalize gamification according to each type of user. Despite the growth of research related to the personalization of gamification, there is still a lack of ecological gamified educational systems (i.e., real systems) capable of recommending the most suitable gamification designs for each user. Facing this challenge, our main objective in this project is to analyze the effects of different gamification designs (i.e., fictional-based gamification, personal-based gamification, performance-based gamification, social gamification, and ecological gamification) on students' experience (i.e., gameful experience). As a result, it is expected to provide recommendations for the most suitable gamification designs for each user type. The results of the project will provide substantial input to researchers, practitioners, and industry members on how to recommend personalized gamification designs to positively affect students' experience, as well as provide insights related to the feasibility of implementing a recommendation system for personalizing gamification.
